Is an electronic signature legally binding?

In most countries, yes, for everyday documents. The US (ESIGN Act and UETA), the EU (eIDAS regulation) and the UK all recognise electronic signatures. A signature can't be refused as evidence just because it's electronic.

What SignFree gives you is what the law calls a simple electronic signature. That's enough for most contracts, forms, rental agreements and consent forms. A few documents, like wills, property deeds or some government filings, need a notary or a qualified signature with a digital certificate. If you're unsure, ask whoever is receiving the document.

Electronic signature vs digital signature

People often use the two terms for the same thing. Strictly, an electronic signature is any signature added electronically, like a drawn or typed one. A digital signature uses a certificate issued to you (for example a government ID certificate) to cryptographically seal the file. SignFree creates electronic signatures and records a SHA-256 fingerprint of each document sent for signing.
